Jaipur: Students’ groups on Saturday threatened to call a statewide strike from Monday demanding an extension of the students’ union polls by a month.
The ABVP has been staging an indefinite protest at the Rajasthan University main gate urging the state government to extend the polling day from August 26 to October 26. Student groups are protesting because the admission process would not be over by August 26. The body has also appealed to the student leaders turned MLAs, including cabinet minister Pratap Singh Khachariyawas and deputy leader of opposition Rajendra Rathore.
Hoshyar Meena, national secretary of ABVP, says that the state has deliberately advanced the polls to kill the spirit of youths. “By announcing polls even before the admission process has been completed is illegal. As per the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations, elections should take place after the fifth week of the start of the admission session. The state has announced it even before they have completed the admission process,” said Meena, who is leading the protest in Jaipur.
Congress party’s student wing, NSUI has kept silent on the date of the election but requesting anonymity they agreed that early polls will not give a fair chance to contest polls. “Those with money will influence the polls since the contesting candidates will not be able to reach out to the voters and only those with money will have an upper edge in winning the polls,” said an NSUI leader.
A senior official told TOI that the dates will remain the same as the elections do take place in August month only. “The elections have not been delayed but the admission process has been delayed by almost a month. Every year in the first week of July, the session commences but the delay in exam results the process has been delayed. If the date of the election will delay It will impact the entire academic year,” said an official.
