Khatri Rulers: Restore buildings of Khatri rulers | Jaipur News

Jaipur: With Kotputli assembly constituency electing a BJP MLA after many years, local residents have started demanding restoration of the centuries-old buildings built by erstwhile Khatri rulers at what is now Palika Bazar in the district town.
In August 2022, the Congress-run civic body had demolished portions of these buildings to widen the road. While many shopkeepers at Palika Bazar had to vacate their rented space, several residents of the area were forced to shift to other places as a result of this demolition drive. Locals became more frustrated when they came to know in August 2022 that the government had selected a remote village adjacent to the Haryana border—about 15 km from the town—to be the district headquarters.
“The state government officially announced the new districts this year. A year before, in August 2022, the local civic body demolished portions of these buildings to widen the road. The civic body had said that this was to ensure the road was wide enough to be ideal for a district headquarters. Now they are saying that the headquarters would come up in a village around 15 kms away. Meanwhile, because of all this politics, I have become unemployed,” said Shivkumar Bansal, who now runs a bookstore from the ground floor of his house.
Locals on Tuesday met the newly elected BJP MLA, Hansjraj Patel, with a request to restore the heritage buildings. “The history of these buildings dates back to almost 300 years. Even Swami Vivekananda had been to this place as a friend and state guest of Khatri rulers. We have requested the MLA to restore the demolished portions and to declare these buildings as heritage,” said Arvind Bansal, a member of the shop owners’ association of Palika Bazar.
Newly elected MLA Hansraj Patel, who hails from Kotputli town itself, stated that he was well aware of the problem and would try to find out a solution. “Let the new government be formed. I would definitely take up the issue,” said Patel.
