JAIPUR: Two notorious criminals from the Anandpal Singh and Rohit Godara gangs were arrested in Churu on Sunday for looting ornaments and diamonds worth over Rs 2 crore from a jeweler in Mumbai.
Bikaner IG Om Prakash said that Churu police arrested the accused, Manoj Nehra (35), and Mahendra Saran (22). “Nehra is a listed hardcore criminal and has been associated with the Anandpal Singh gang.
The second accused is Saran, he is also a notorious criminal and worked with the Rohit Godara gang,” he said.
Prakash informed TOI that a special team of Churu police arrested the two accused and recovered stolen items worth over Rs 1.50 crore from them. SP (Churu) Rajesh Kumar Meena said that on May 31, four persons looted a jeweler in Mumbai.
They posed as cops in plain clothes from the crime branch and fled with the ornaments and diamonds of the jeweler when he had traveled from Hyderabad to Mumbai.
The Sion police station in Mumbai filed a case and launched an investigation into the incident.
“The accused fled with Rs 27 lakh cash, 20 gold biscuits weighing 2 kg each, 15 items of diamond jewelry, etc. A total of Rs 2.62 lakh was looted from the accused,” Meena said. He added that the Churu police were in contact with their counterparts in Mumbai regarding the suspects.
“We had been continuously working on leads for the suspects and found some possible local connections and tracked down two key accused,” Meena said. He further revealed that Saran was the mastermind of this daring heist.
“Saran’s friend Prashant Choudhary is a resident of Sardarshahar in Churu. Choudhary works at a jewelry shop in Hyderabad. Both Choudhary and Saran plotted this heist scheme,” Meena said. According to the Churu police, to carry out the heist, Saran and his aides Kishanath, Ashok, and Manoj went to Mumbai in an SUV.
“We have recovered over 70 percent of the stolen items. Our teams are working round the clock to arrest other suspects,” Meena said.
