Raise jail term for food adulteration: Panel
A parliamentary panel in India has recommended a mandatory jail term and increase in fines for the adulteration of food and drink intended for sale. The panel suggests a minimum six months in jail and a minimum fine of Rs 25,000 for adulterating food or drink. They also propose a minimum six months in jail and a minimum fine of Rs 10,000 for selling noxious or unfit food or drink. The panel argues that these stricter penalties are necessary due to the serious health problems caused by consuming adulterated or unfit food.
CIIMS study reveals no Covid traces in wastewater samples
A study conducted by the GM Taori Central Indian Institute of Medical Sciences in Nagpur has found that the presence of the Covid-19 virus in the city’s wastewater has become almost negligible. The study involved testing untreated wastewater samples for Covid and other viruses as part of public health surveillance efforts. The researchers believe that by monitoring wastewater, they can potentially predict future pandemics in advance. The study also found that the most common virus in the samples was hepatitis C, followed by other viruses such as chikungunya and rotavirus. The researchers are now working on proposals to enhance wastewater surveillance and pandemic preparedness.
Mobile phone users in Odisha get sample emergency alert messages from govt
The department of telecommunications (DoT) in India’s Odisha state conducted a pilot test of its emergency alert system, sending messages to mobile phone users. The messages, sent in English and Odia languages, caused initial panic due to the loud alert sound and sudden flashing warning message. However, users later understood the purpose of the message. The test aims to enhance public safety by providing timely alerts during emergencies such as natural disasters. The DoT is working to address issues with the remaining 0.01% of mobile phones that did not receive the alerts.
