Floods in Ajmer: Ana Sagar Lake overflows, JLN Hospital inundated | Ajmer News
AJMER/JAIPUR: With continuous rains lashing Ajmer for more than 24 hours, there was a flood-like situation at many places in the district on Monday. The city’s Ana Sagar Lake started overflowing and three of its gates had to be opened to release the water in the evening.
The city roads were flooded. JLN Hospital, the city’s biggest government healthcare facility, was flooded and patients had to be shifted to its wards on the first floor. Rainwater entered JLN Hospital on Sunday and then again on Monday. Hospital superintendent Dr Neeraj Gupta said water entered the orthopaedic ward of the hospital and 18 patients admitted there were shifted to other wards.
Colonies like Sukh Sagar Vihar, Vaishali Nagar and surrounding residential areas around Ana Sagar Lake were flooded. Water entered houses in Shankar Nagar, Dholabhata, Nagara, Gujjar Dharti and surrounding areas. Walls collapsed at two places in Ghooghra and Babu Mohalla in Kesarganj, but none was hurt. Sukh Sagar Vihar colony residents said there was nothing to eat as everything was destroyed in the rains. “It is impossible to move on Ana Sagar link road as the whole area is flooded,” said a resident of Christian Ganj. The situation was worse in Gujjar Dharti, Nagara and Dholabhata areas too.
“They had not even cleaned the canals and the rainwater spread the silt everywhere and even into our houses,” said a resident of Prakash Road, where commuters were found struggling to reach their houses.
In Pushkar, the market was inundated
Vendors left their carts floating on the road. Electricity failed in many areas and supply remained erratic . In Vaishali Nagar, a transformer fell while a roadways bus crashed into a divider because of low visibility. No casualty was reported in any of the accidents. In Pushkar, the market was inundated and it was impossible to cross the ghats.
According to the Met department, Ajmer received 163mm of rain on Monday. The showers started around 10am and continued till late evening. The rainfall was less compared to other districts, but enough to inundate the city situated in the Aravali foothills.
Heavy rainfall continued in other districts as well on Monday, as Gadhbor (Rajsamand) received rainfall of 385mm till 8am; Desuri (Pali) 379mm; Sheoganj (Sirohi) 345mm; Bali (Pali) 345mm; Nagarfort (Tonk) 315mm; Kumbhalgarh (Rajsamand) 269mm, and Nainwa (Bundi) 142mm.
Rainfall varying from 10-100mm was received at several places across the state. Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot will conduct aerial surveys of the affected areas in Barmer, Jalore, Sirohi, Abu Road and Pali on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Monday, he reviewed the essential services of electricity, water, roads, medical, etc., and directed authorities to start restoring electricity.
Jaipur Met office director Radhey Shyam Sharma said Cyclone Biparjoy “has brought rainfall that we don’t even witness on a single day during the monsoon season. Many places witnessed rainfall of 300mm. In the next 24 hours, the cyclone’s impact will vanish. Except for some places in Kota division where heavy rainfall would be witnessed, mild showers would be witnessed in the rest of the state.”
