Former sarpanch’s car damaged in the incident in Barmer district

JAISALMER: Five people were arrested for attack on a former sarpanch of Samdadi town in Barmer on Saturday night. The man was attacked allegedly because he had complained against illegal river sand mining in the Luni river area in Balotra subdivision.
The attack indicates that the mafia that run illegal river sand mining in the area have got bolder in recent months.
The entire market remained closed on Sunday in protest against the incident as local residents sat on a dharna at Gaur Circle. The villagers alleged that the royalty personnel were perpetrating such attacks due to the support they get from the police and district administration.
As the former sarpanch, Babulal Parihar, was returning home in his car at about 11 PM on Saturday, some royalty personnel in two Bolero cars chased him. When Parihar did not stop his car, the Bolero behind him hit his car at the main market, causing damage to his car.
After the incident, a huge crowd gathered on the spot, and a team from Samdadi police arrived. Police took five people in custody by chasing them.
The dharna was attended, among others, by former MLA Kan Singh Kotdi, Siwana pradhan Mukund Singh Rajpurohit and other public representatives. SP Dhanphool Meena, SDM Kusumlata Chauhan and Siwana MLA Hameer Singh Bhayal reached the spot and talked to the agitators.
