Jaisalmer: Jaisalmer Brides’ Family Boycotted For Riding Horses In Pre-wedding Ritual, Fir Registered | Jaipur News

JAISALMER: An FIR was registered on Tuesday after the family of two sisters was boycotted by the community panchayat in Mel village of Siwana in Barmer district for following a ritual’ called ‘bandoli’. The sisters as brides had taken out a pre-wedding procession in the village sitting on horses, which is usually done by grooms.
Irked with the move, the panchayat not only boycotted them but also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000. Police said a probe has begun and action would be taken against the accused.
Shankararam got his two sisters Lakshmi (23) and Dhapu (22) married on February 6. During one of the pre-wedding rituals, the girls sat on horses as part of the ‘bandoli’ ritual and took a round of the village, breaking age-old male oriented ritual, which irked the community panchayat. On February 7, both sisters went to their in-laws house in Jodhpur.
However, after around 2.5 months of the marriage, a panchayat was called in Siwana. Shankararam and his family were called and given the punishment along with the fine. The entire village had been told to sever ties with the families.
In his complaint, Shankar Ram said that women too should have equal place in male dominated society, but few narrow minded panchs in the community did not like this.
The panchs called a meeting of the community at Khalason ka Vas Ramdev temple in Siwana and boycotted the entire family from the community. People of the other community were also asked not to go to the house of this family.
Shankararam said that his father died a few years ago and he has 8 sisters and 6 of them were already married. He got his two sisters married in February and since it was the last marriage in the family it was organised in a grand manner.
