A hospital with ‘best’ tag serves under mild tugs for political credit

The community health centre (CHC) at Jalsu in Amber assembly constituency, which has a range of modern facilities available for patients and was rated the best CHC in Jaipur district in 2022, keeps providing medical help to people in the region. The ‘best CHC’ tag was conferred on it under the Kayakalp Award scheme of the ministry of health and family welfare.
While the state’s ruling Congress gets credit for raising the efficiency of the CHC, supporters of the Opposition BJP-the party of Amber MLA Satish Poonia-also give a share of the credit to their party. The hospital’s staff, however, keep serving the people without any trace of political considerations.
On Friday, Mahender Chaudhary, a farmer at Lalpura village in the constituency, was happy with the treatment the CHC started offering to his sick wife. “She was admitted to the female ward this morning. She had started bleeding and fainted. We brought her here immediately. It is close to our village, and the facilities are good. Earlier, we had to either go to Chomu or Jaipur for treatment. We have been coming here for the past 3-4 years,” said Chaudhary, who lives just four kilometres from the CHC.
Chaudhary said even though Congress is strong in Jalsu, he believes BJP’s sitting MLA, Satish Poonia, stands a good chance of winning the November 25 election in Amber constituency. “No one can deny that this CHC was developed during Congress MLA Ganga Sahay Sharma’s time,” he said.
The 80-bed CHC at Jalsu is equipped with critical care facilities and ICU beds and caters to around 100 villages. It has specialties such gynaecology, paediatrics, medicine, and anaesthesia.
Whenever the supporters of Congress in Amber claim many CHCs in Jaipur district were modernised by the Ashok Gehlot government and that several PHCs in the district were converted to CHCs, BJP workers remind them of MLA Satish Poonia’s contributions for the CHC at Jalsu. Poonia has sponsored an ultrasound machine with 3D and colour doppler facility from his MLA-LAD fund, and it has been installed at the CHC.
The 3D ultrasound machine costs Rs 40 lakh, said Dr Shivsingh Barala of the CHC. “There are also an ECG machine and a digital X-ray machine we have purchased,” he added.
