Jaipur: After the fifth general body meeting of JMC-Greater on Tuesday, mayor Somya Gurjar said that the civic body has decided to allot Rs 1 crore to each ward for specific development work. The mayor said that 20,000 new street lights will be procured and wards that do not have sufficient street lights will be given 300 lights each while more developed wards will be given 50 lights each by Diwali.
The mayor announced that to increase the revenue of the civic body, targets of collecting relevant taxes will be given to officials with immediate effect and action will be taken against officials who fail to meet 70% of the target by the next House meeting. It was also decided that a detailed project report will be made for the second phase of Amrit 2.0 project under which new sewer lines will be laid in the city, costing Rs 435 crore, the mayor said.
Dy mayor walks out
The general body meeting started on a heated note with deputy mayor Puneet Karnawat having an argument with mayor Somya Gurjar. He later walked out of the House. Both the mayor and deputy mayor are from the BJP.
At the outset, Karnawat raised the issue of convention, saying that the deputy mayor and leader of opposition speak first, followed by the councillors, but the mayor had decided that all councillors will speak turn wise. Karnawat wanted the discussion to start with him, but the mayor insisted that the discussion start from councillor of Ward 1.
After not being allowed to speak first, Karnawat said, “It has been the tradition that the deputy mayor always starts the discussion on the agenda in the House, but today you (mayor) broke this tradition. You will be known for breaking the tradition of the House.”
After this, he walked out of the House and went to his chamber.
BJP councillors protest
As soon as the meeting started, BJP councillors insisted on action against engineers working in the zones of Murlipura and Malviya Nagar for alleged indecency. The deputy mayor also came out in support of the councilors who started creating a ruckus. The BJP councillors went ahead and began protesting right in front of the mayor’s chair. After this, the mayor instructed commissioner Mahendra Soni to form a committee and conduct an inquiry against the accused engineers.
To this, Karnawat said, “How can one officer take action against another? People’s representatives should also be included in the inquiry committee.”
The mayor assured to involve public representatives, but the councillors were not satisfied with the assurance.
Street light committee chief alleges corruption
Sukhpreet Bansal, chairperson of the street light committee, alleged corruption in the installation of street lights. Bansal alleged that those given the contract were not submitting any details related to costs. She said that last year, a child had died by electrocution but the contractor was still given the contract instead of being removed. Bansal said that the Congress government in the state claims that the anti-corruption bureau (ACB) takes strict action, but nothing was being done in this matter.
