iPhones were among the first devices to receive eSIM support and that makes. Apple first introduced eSIM support with the launch of the iPhone XR, iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. All the iPhones launched since then, except iPhone SE, support eSIM and also come with a physical SIM slot. Apple is likely to get rid of the latter at least in some regions.
The Wall Streed Journal has reported that the tech giant is planning to introduce an eSIM-only variant with iPhone 14 series in some regions. According to the report, Apple has already started asking carriers in the US to prepare for eSIM only variant for the upcoming iPhones.
The company is not expected to launch eSIM-only variants everywhere, but it is likely the company’s first step in that direction.
While eSIM adoption has increased and most carriers across the world now offer eSIM support and certainly it isn’t sudden, still the question remains: if the world is ready to let go of the physical SIM slot from their smartphones.
The eSIM brings several advantages to users. First, it saves a lot of space inside the smartphone which can be used for other components like battery, more camera modules, better thermal systems and so on.
Apart from that, eSIM is also more secure than physical SIM cards in case of theft or stolen devices. Being a digital SIM, telecom service providers can also send a security update to devices at once and also remotely check for network issues.
