Barmer District: Deependra, Bowler From Remote Barmer Village, Picked For India A | Jaipur News

Jaipur: Prayers of the family of 17-year-old Deependra Singh Sodha were answered on Friday when he got a call from Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) confirming his inclusion in the U-19 India A team for the upcoming quadrilateral series against England and Bangladesh. Hailing from a not so known village Undkha in Barmer district, Deependra came to Jaipur in 2019 and started working hard to chase his dreams.
As he got a call from the BCCI on Friday afternoon, TOI spoke to his family members. “This is a beginning. God has been kind and we are hopeful that with his grit and determination he will go further in what he loves the most – cricket,” said Bhagwan Singh, father of Deependra, who is a police constable posted at Abhay Command Centre at Barmer.
Deependra is aware that it is just the beginning and while his family was overjoyed, he asked them to be subtle in celebration. “I am excited, but do not wish to get carried away. I also want my family to not go overboard as I have a long way to go,” Deependra said.
During Covid-19-time Deependra was into his training and following a strict diet as a pace bowler and missed his family.
Deependra was elated and believes he needs to focus on what he can do best to improve his pace bowling. “I am happy as I am looking forward to learning more and doing well. I will try to stick to basics of cricket. I am thankful to my mentors Rohit Jhalani and Pankaj Gupta, former Ranaji players who believed in me and facilitated me in sharpening my skills at Jaipuria Cricket Academy,” Deependra said.
This year Deependra has represented Rajasthan U-19 team and also played in the challenger trophy for India. Now he has been selected for India A for the upcoming series.
