JAISALMER: Ten months after they were killed in an attack on a UN peacekeeping contingent in the Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa, BSF head constables Sanwala Ram Vishnoi and Shishupal Singh were awarded the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal by UN Secretary-General António Guterres at the UN headquarters in New York on Saturday.
Vishnoi was a resident of Barmer district and Singh of Sikar district. A defence ministry spokesperson said they made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty while upholding the highest tradition of the force on July 26, 2022. The medal was received by Secretary General, Field Support, on behalf of India. The defence spokesperson said that the United Nations headquarters observed the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, also marking the 75th anniversary of United Nations Peacekeeping, on Saturday. Vishnoi’s son, Virdharam, a resident of Khechadon in Band village of Barmer, also joined BSF in 1999 and is now head constable.
