Bisalpur: City To Get More Water From Bisalpur Dam In Four Months | Jaipur News

JAIPUR: Twenty-four years after construction, officials of the Public Health and Engineering Department (PHED) are set to augment the water supply from Bisalpur Dam to Jaipur under the Bisalpur-II project. The first phase of the project is expected to get over by May.

“The idea is to enhance water supply from 600 MLD to 816 MLD Bisalpur Dam to Jaipur. The augmentation is expected to start from May in phases. We are hopeful to supply around 630-640 MLD of water. The additional 30-40 MLD would help us to supply water at new areas and would also solve the water shortage problem of summer months to a great extent,” Satish Jain, superintendent engineer of PHED, told TOI.
In order to augment the facility, PHED officials are first enhancing the capacity of the water treatment plant in Surajpura and would install nine new pumps at the intermediate pumping station in Renwal. From there, water would be supplied at the storage facility in Balawala located just at the entry point of Jaipur city in Sanganer.
“All these augmentation works are going on in full swing. By the last week of February, we are going to connect the hydraulic pipelines with the pumping facility in Renwal. This is one of the most important jobs for the project. For this we may have to stop the water supply for a few hours,” added Jain.
Bisalpur Dam was constructed in 1999 when the Congress was in power in Rajasthan and in 2004, the BJP-led government started laying pipelines to connect the city with Bisalpur. Finally, in 2009, water from Bisalpur started coming to Jaipur.
However, the project witnessed a major protest as farmers from Tonk, relying on Bisalpur water for irrigation, opposed demanding the share of the water. Even there were public outrage in surrounding districts like Ajmer and Bhilwara. The protest became so violent that on June 13, 2005, five farmers were shot dead while protesting the diversion of Bisalpur water to Jaipur.
“Such a situation is not possible this time. We are augmenting the supply of Bisalpur water keeping in mind the demand of water in Jaipur in 2023. As far as Tonk and Ajmer is concerned the present supply capacity is enough at least till 2029,” a senior engineer added.
With this augmentation additional water would be provided even in areas enroute like Basi, Dudu, Sambhar and Phulera.
