SC calls for dead body management protocol | India News

NEW DELHI: Supreme Court on Friday asked the Union government to prepare a dead body management protocol for disaster and non-disaster situations on being reminded about a mix up at a Delhi mortuary during pandemic resulting in a Hindu cremating two bodies, mother of a Christian and later his own, depriving the Christian man of the last rites of his mother.
A bench of Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra were disposing of a large number of PILs, which were filed during the pandemic to address specific novel issues but have now become infructuous. However, advocate Manoj George pointed out that his PIL seeking a standard operating procedure for mortuaries to avoid mix up of dead bodies remained relevant.
The bench agreed. It also accepted George’s plea to make the National Disaster Management Authority a party in the proceedings to assist in framing the protocol.
