Jaipur: Diya Kumari is a member of the erstwhile Jaipur royal family and BJP MP from Rajsamand, who was asked to contest the Assembly polls from the Vidhyadhar Nagar constituency in Jaipur. She defeated Sitaram Agarwal of the Congress by the highest margin of this assembly polls, by over 71,000 votes.
Since joining the BJP in 2013, Kumari has won all three elections she contested.She became an MLA from the Sawai Madhopur constituency in 2013. In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, she was elected as an MP from Rajsamand, with one of the biggest victory margins of 5.5 lakh votes. This success marked her entry into the national political arena as a Member of Parliament.
Kumari, one of the general secretaries of the party, was given charge of managing the conclusion event of the BJP’s Parivartan Yatra on September 25 in Jaipur which Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended.
She also led the protests in Jaipur against Gehlot when the BJP organised a campaign against issues including law and order and exam paper leaks.
During her campaign for the Assembly polls, the 52-year-old made a pitch for the environment, education, healthcare, and women’s empowerment.
In 2019, she was elected to serve as a member of the government’s National Tiger Conservation Authority. Diya Kumari also served as the state brand ambassador of the National ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ campaign.
She is the granddaughter of Man Singh II, the last reigning maharaja of the princely state of Jaipur, and daughter of Brig Sawai Bhawani Singh and Rajmata Padmini Devi of Jaipur. The blend of royalty and down-to-earth persona has made her a popular figure among the people of Rajasthan.
A true educationist at heart, she has established The Palace School and the Maharaja Sawai Bhawani Singh School —two highly prestigious educational institutions in Jaipur. As a businesswoman she runs two hotels, the Rajmahal Palace in Jaipur and the Jaipur House in Mt Abu. She also manages ventures like Durga Diya Enterprises, Baradari restaurant and museum shops at the City Palace, as well as the Ashok Club, an exclusive sports and recreational club.
