Essential Service Voters: Over 2.58 Lakh Essential Service Voters Exercise Their Franchise | Jaipur News

Jaipur: Till now, 2,58,617 essential service voters, including police officers, government employees and others, have exercised their franchise at poll facilitation centres – through postal ballots– that have been set up for officials and employees on election duty, said chief electoral officer Praveen Gupta. He said voting can be done at these centres till November 24.On Monday, 65,476 such voters exercised their franchise.
According to orders issued by the election commission (EC) the facility of voting through postal ballots from this year are for doctors, paramedical staff, ambulance workers, electricians in the energy department, linemen, pump operators, turners in PHED, employees working in milk committees of Rajasthan, driver-conductors in roadways and media persons authorised by the EC.
For the first time journalists have been included in the category of service voters. Till now, the facility of service voting was available only to the employees and officers posted on election duty, Army, and paramilitary personnel.
After the exclusion of Karanpur assembly constituency, there are 5.25 crore voters in the 199 assembly seats, data from the election department stated. There are 2.50 lakh voters in Karanpur assembly.
The election for the Karanpur seat has been adjourned due to the demise of Congress candidate Gurmeet Singh Kooner. EC will notify a fresh date of polling. He died at AIIMS, New Delhi, on November 15. Kooner, who was the sitting MLA from Karanpur, was admitted to the geriatric medicine ward of the AIIMS in Delhi on November 12. He died of sepsis following a renal disease, according to the death certificate issued by the hospital. He was also suffering from hypertension.
