Sawai Man: Sms Docs Perform Brainstem Tumour Op With Hole In Skull | Jaipur News
Jaipur: Neurosurgeons of Sawai Man Singh (SMS) hospital on Thursday performed the first neuronavigation-guided stereotactic biopsy of brainstem tumour on an 18-year-old patient brought from Mathura in UP.
Brainstem is the most important area of the brain, responsible for wakefulness, respiration, and functioning of the heart. Brainstorm tumour surgery is a very challenging and complicated one, so the neurosurgeons decided to do stereotactic biopsy of the tumour with help of the neuronavigation system through only a small hole in the skull.
“The 18-year-old patient from Mathura came with difficulty in breathing and speaking and with weakness in left side. She was diagnosed with tumour in brainstem area of the brain,” said Dr Manish Agarwal, senior professor and unit head (neurosurgery) at SMS hospital.
The hospital’s head of neurosurgery, Dr Ashok Gupta, said this is a recent technique which helps in correct localization and removal of deep-seated brain tumour with minimal or no damage to the healthy brain, so that post-operative neurological deficits can be minimized. TNN
