Indira Gandhi Canal: Indira Gandhi Canal Closed For 60 Days From March 28 | Jaipur News
Jaisalmer: The districts of Bikaner, Sri Ganganagar, Hanumangarh, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Barmer, Churu, Nagaur, Sikar and Jhunjhunu will face water shortage during summers as the Indira Gandhi Canal will be closed for 60 days. The Punjab government is preparing to repair the canal. During this time even drinking water will not be available. PHED will supply it from their storage tanks.
According to the officials, the Indira Gandhi canal project will be closed from March 28 for 60 days. Water resource department has completed its preparation for the work to be done during these 60 days. Tenders have been issued for work and relining of the pipe.
Relining will be done for the first time ever since the canal’s construction, for which Rs 739 crore will be spent. Relining and bed construction will be done for around 65km from 200RD to 600RD of the main canal.
According to villagers, potable water crisis increases every year when the canal is closed for maintenance. Despite officials’ best efforts the villagers face this problem every year. tnn
