Jaipur: To reduce the use of single-use plastic bags, JMC Heritage has now decided to install cloth bag vending machines at markets and mandis in the city. As a trial five such machines are being installed in areas under the jurisdiction of JMC-Heritage, said officials.
Customers will be able to get a cloth bag by putting in a coin of Rs 5 in the machine.
“As a pilot project we will be installing five cloth bag vending machines, one in the head office and four in the different zones of corporation. We have been continuously working to reduce use of plastic bags in market places and now we want to give this alternative to people. The machines will be installed over the next two weeks and the service will be available to people by first week of March,” said Ashish Kumar, deputy commissioner for health at JMC Heritage.
Kumar further said that depending on the response from the public, more machines will be installed in future. The corporation is planning to install up to 20 such machines in areas under JMC Heritage.
Similar machines will also be installed at marketplaces in areas under JMC Greater. A total of 10 such machines are likely to be installed in JMC Greater area. The municipal corporation has been taking regular action against use of single use plastic in markets and seizing plastic on a daily basis. On Tuesday, teams from JMC Heritage seized over 12 kgs of single-use plastic and imposed a carriage charge of Rs 40,500.
“Surprise inspections are being conducted regularly in marketplaces since past two months. This has helped in reducing the use of polythene bags which are banned. The process of confiscating polythene bags will continue in future too,” added the official.
