Traffic Lights: Signal-free Tiraha Will Lead To More Traffic Lights And Foot Overbridges | Jaipur News

Jaipur: To make the city’s much-hyped first signal-free traffic project at the Laxmi Mandir Tiraha feasible, the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) now plans to install new traffic signals barely 200 metre away, on both sides of the underpass of Tonk Puliya, and also construct another footbridge around 30 metre away from the present unutilised one right in front of the Puliya.
With this, a section of the civic body officials is claiming that the project is like breaking a butterfly on a wheel. “The project would definitely make the Tiraha signal-free. But sooner or later, JDA would plan to install traffic signals on both sides of the underpass below the Tonk Phatak Puliya, which even currently remains highly congested. JDA has planned to make a foot overbridge at the Tiraha. Another foot overbridge near the Puliya is still there and remains unutilised on most days,” said a JDA official, who did not wish to be quoted.
Officials claimed that instead of simplifying things, the project would actually make situation worse for a section of motorists. Once the project is on, no vehicle from Gandhi Nagar Tiraha would be allowed to take a right turn towards the road leading to Police Headquarters and towards Sahakar Marg. Even vehicles intending to go to the three roads in between will not be allowed to take U-turn from the Laxmi Mandir Tiraha.
“All these vehicles need to take U-turn through the underpass below the Tonk Puliya. At present both sides of the underpass are over congested, and things get worse on the Barkatnagar side whenever the Tonk Phatak remains close to facilitate train movements. In all, this project would benefit traffic movements on Tonk Road to some extent heavily affecting traffic movements on the adjacent roads,” said a traffic official.
Another important problem is pedestrian movement. JDA had stated that they would completely block the Tiraha and even the pedestrians will not be allowed to cross the road. Every day thousands cross this important junction of the city and the lone foot overbridge remains unutilized as this is located a few metres away from the Tiraha. JDA officials had confirmed that they would spend Rs 3 to 4 crore and would start constructing a footbridge at this crossing soon.

Laxmi Mandir Tiraha project incomplete sans railway land
The signal-free traffic project in Jaipur, known as the Laxmi Mandir Tiraha project, will remain incomplete due to the failure of the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) to acquire a piece of land adjacent to the Tonk Phatak. The JDA was unable to take over the land from the railways due to a decision made in a meeting between the state government and the railways in 2021. This decision has made it difficult to acquire the land unless it is handed over by the railways. As a result, motorists can expect significant traffic congestion in the area.

JDA removes encroachment from Lal Kothi for underpass
The Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) has cleared encroachments from zone-3 near Lal Kothi area to make way for an underpass as part of the Laxmi Mandir Junction Traffic Project. The underpass will connect Sahakar Marg with Tonk Road to make the Laxmi Mandir crossing signal-free. Tin sheds, tarpaulin-bamboo, dhabas, fruit-flower shops, and carts were removed during the operation. This is not the first anti-encroachment drive conducted by the authorities.

With all eyes on Delhis newest attraction, signal-free corridor turned into slow lane
The newly developed Bharat Mandapam at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi has become a popular attraction for visitors. The area, which was previously a high-security zone, now features illuminated fountains, lit-up flower boards, and a conference venue. However, the influx of visitors has led to congestion, with parked cars and people milling around. The Public Works Department (PWD) has installed fountains and streetlights to beautify the area, but the congestion remains. To alleviate the problem, the PWD is considering banning car parking and encouraging the use of public transportation.
