The male leopard was killed in a territorial fight with tiger RVT – 1 in Jaitpur range in RVTR, said chief conservator of forest (CCF) Sharda Prasad Singh. It was a 9-year-old male leopard and the body was disposed of as per norms after the postmortem by a medical board later in the day on Thursday, he said.
There are around two dozen leopards in RVTR, said former wildlife warden Prathvi Singh Rajawat. Meanwhile, wildlife enthusiast Bitthal Sanadhya termed the killing of a leopard in territorial fight with tiger a major failure of monitoring by Ramgarh Vishdhari Tiger Reserve management.
The monitoring team should have heard the roaring of the tiger in the fight and on the bases of pug marks, they should have pre-ascertained the movement of the animals in the same place, said Sanadhya. Moreover, the forest officials concealed the killing of the leopard throughout the day and did not inform wildlife activists, he added.
