Liquor: Inmate Runs Liquor Trade From Jail, Held After Mobile Seizure | Jaipur News
Jaipur: Managing a liquor trade from the confines of a fortified prison may seem like an improbable feat, but a 32-year-old inmate oversaw profits, monitored business deals, and supervised sales records for his liquor shops from the district jail in Pratapgarh.
These details came to light when the Pratapgarh police announced on Friday the arrest of Faizal Khan, a native of the Akhepur area in the district.
SP (Pratapgarh) Amit Kumar said that Khan was incarcerated after being arrested for a double murder wherein he ran over two men back in 2021.
“We realised that the accused was presiding over his liquor business from behind the prison walls. A few days ago, he was transferred to the Ajmer high-security prison,” he said.
Kumar explained that a prison guard had discovered a suspicious parcel back in February. Upon removing the tape from the parcel, the guard found three small, brand-new mobile phones, two SIM cards, and some tobacco products concealed inside it with great caution.
He explained that the district police subsequently launched an investigation into the case and examined the contraband recovered from the parcel.
After questioning the suspect who had purchased SIM cards, the police learned that the parcel had been dropped off at the jail for Khan.
“We found that Khan was running licensed liquor shops located in Pratapgarh. These communication devices were intended for Khan to oversee his liquor business,” he added.
He also mentioned that during an earlier inspection of the district jail, as many as 13 mobile phones were recovered in 2023. Upon investigation, it was discovered that one of the mobile phones recovered from the jail at that time also belonged to Faizal Khan.
The police suspect that the accused may have owned the business of at least two liquor shops in the district, possibly through dummy or partnership arrangements.
This incident is likely one of the first of its kind where an inmate incarcerated in prison was able to run his commercial activities from the prison without much obstacles.

The NGO is also working on assisting inmates struggling to reintegrate after long jail terms.

Bihar: Seized liquor stolen from police store room in Muzaffarpur district
Thieves broke into a police store room in Bihar and stole several cartons of seized liquor.
