Jaisalmer: Migratory birds have started arriving in Jaisalmer with the onset of winter season. Out of the nine species of vultures in the country and abroad, seven of these species can be witnessed in the pasture landsand jungles of the district. Maximum of these vultures can be seen in the Degrai pasture land, Sam and in its nearby villages, Ramdeora and its nearby areas.Happy to witness the arrival of these migratory birds, many wildlife enthusiasts and scientists from distant areas are coming here to study these birds.
Environment enthusiast Radheshyam Pemani said that the arrival of vultures to Jaisalmer is good for the environment. The Cinereus species is found in Balochistan, Gilgit, Punjab, Assam and a few parts of Himalayas at a height of 1,800 to 5,600 metre. These are found from Southern Europe to East China during the time of breeding. These species have come to Bhadariya and Dholiya areas. The average length of this species is 110cm.
He said rare vultures come from the Himalayas to Jaisalmer and they stay here from October-November to February. For 10 years, they had stopped coming to Jaisalmer but restarted visiting the desert district for the last 2 years. These endangered species help in keeping the environment clean as they eat dead animals, which keeps the environment clean.
Bird expert Sumer Singh Sanwata said that Himalayan Griffons from Asia, Europe, Tibet and cold areas come here in winters for food as due to extreme cold food becomes a challenge for them. The winter temperature in Jaisalmer district is suitable for these birds and also there is a kit of livestock in the district so they get food easily.
Wildlife lover Parth Jagani said that groups of vultures are seen in Bhadariya and Dholiya areas and they get a lot of dead animals for food but due to increase in dogs these vultures do not get dead animals to eat. He said that nine species of vultures are found in the entire country out of which two species reside in hills and the remaining seven species including Cinereus, Griffon, Egyptian, White Rampand, Himalayan, Red-Headed and Indian are camping here in the jungles.
Out of these seven species, three migratory species including Cilerus, Himalayan and Griffon enter the district with the starting of winter and return with the starting of summers. Till now, tracking of migratory vultures has not been started. If their tracking is done then special steps can be taken for their conservation.
