JAIPUR: Protesters in large numbers gathered outside the Murlipura police station on Saturday, demanding compensation for the family of 24-year-old youth, Abhimanyu Sharma, who they allege died after being hit by an SUV that was part of a BJP election rally.
The family of the victim, who was a resident of Hanuman Nagar Nangal Bohra, filed an FIR, claiming that BJP workers had invited Sharma to attend a rally for BJP candidate from Vidhyadhar Nagar Diya Kumari on Thursday. At 6.30pm, an SUV that was part of the rally allegedly hit Sharma.
In the FIR, Sharma’s family also accused the SUV driver of speeding and reckless driving. They claimed that after the accident, Sharma was not taken to the hospital promptly. The FIR was registered against an unknown person under IPC Section 279 (Rash driving or riding on a public way) and 304A (causing death by negligence).
Sharma’s family and relatives demanded adequate compensation, including a job for the family. The deceased’s uncle Vijay Sharma informed TOI that Sharma was a photographer and could have been saved if given timely treatment. “The family received a message from the SMS mortuary on Friday evening, urging them to come for identification,” he said.
Protestors, including members of the Brahmin community, raised slogans demanding justice for Sharma on the spot.
Congress candidate Sitaram Agarwal from the Vidhyadhar Nagar constituency visited the police station, criticising the saffron party for not inquiring about the injured youth’s condition.
