Punjab Releases Water Into Indira Gandhi Canal After Two Months | Jaipur News

Jaisalmer: After two months of canal closure water was released on Thursday from Harrike barrage in Punjab to Indira Gandhi canal and it is expected to reach Jaisalmer tail end by June 8. After this water will be available for drinking water and irrigation.
In April and May due to western disturbances Rajasthan received heavy rainfall and hence according to PHED there would be no problem of drinking water in western part of the state. The Bhakra Beas management board through video conferencing (VC) held a meeting in which the share of water flowing in the canals was decided.
According to the information, due to rains the lining work at RD 238 was affected so the closure was extended to two more days. The chief engineer confirming this said that the common bank of IGNP’s RD 238 caved in due to which releasing water was delayed.
In the VC, Hanumangarh chief engineer Amarjeet Singh Meharda represented Rajasthan. In the meeting the water level in the dams were reviewed after which the allotted share and released water in Rajasthan was discussed.
Meharda chief engineer of water resources (North Hanumangarh) said that the water supply will start on Thursday morning. The release of water was delayed due to rains. The meeting of the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) technical committee happened for the share of water wastage for all the canals including Indira Gandhi Nahar Pariyojana (IGNP) . The farmers of IGNP will be given water for irrigation from June 8. In the meeting it was decided to give 6,000 cusec water for drinking purposes from June 1 to 7from the Harikae barrage.
From June 8 in IGNP regulation of one group out of 3 will be announced and water for irrigation will be available. For the Bhakra system 1,200 cusec, 1,500 cusec for IGNP and 600 cusec for Nohar-Sidhmukh project has been decided.
With this the farmers are hopeful to get abundant water for irrigation. Also, the facilitation of water will be suitable for sowing groundnut, gwar, moong and moth.
