Rajasthan: Clashes in Hanumangarh town over alleged eve-teasing; 35 held | Jaipur News

JAIPUR: Tension gripped Nohar town of Hanumangarh district after Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) block president Satveer Saharan and a few others got injured in a clash with members of another community, late on Wednesday evening.
On Thursday morning, internet services were suspended at Nohar, Bhadara and Ravatsar areas of Hanumangarh. Police have arrested 35 persons, so far, for these clashes.
The violent confrontation was triggered when members of the VHP alleged that some youths of a community, sitting at a tea stall outside a temple, teased girls and women devotees.
According to cops, this group was confronted by a large number of VHP workers, led by Saharan. “At least, six persons, including Saharan, got injured as it turned into a violent clash,” said a senior police officer.
Soon after the incident, a large number of people gathered at the spot and blocked the Nohar-Rawtsar road.
“We have suspended internet services at Nohar, Bhadara and Ravatsar areas of Hanaumangarh,” said divisional commissioner Neeraj K Pawan of Bikaner division to TOI.
Twenty-seven persons were arrested for disturbing communal harmony while eight others were held for their involvement in violence, said the cops.
A large number of police personnel has been deployed in the area and a strict vigil is being maintained.
‘Held meeting with peace community’
Jaipur: Bikaner range IG Om Prakash said on Thursday evening, “We held a meeting with the members of the peace community. The situation is totally under control and normal. Internet services are likely to be resumed soon.” Police organised a march along with the members of two communities to urge the public to avoid rumours and to clarify that things were normal and under control.
Speaking on the clash, Jaiveer Saharan, younger brother of the VHP leader, said, “On receiving information that eve-teasing is regularly done by members of a community, my brother had gone to the spot along with VHP workers. They were badly attacked. Though out of danger, my brother has sustained severe head injuries. I am in Hanumangarh with him.”
