Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot launches 100 days job scheme for urban unemployed | Jaipur News

JAIPUR: Chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Friday launched the ambitious Indira Gandhi Urban Employment Guarantee Scheme to provide 100 days of employment to families in urban areas.
Gehlot started the campaign by doing shramdaan at Khania Ki Baori on Agra Road in Jaipur. The baori (stepwell) will be restored by spending Rs 20 lakh under the scheme.

The chief minister interacted with 10 women beneficiaries who were presented job cards during the function. In all, around 40,000 people were given jobs on the first day. Out of 4 lakh people who have applied for registration, job cards have been issued to 2.25 lakh people in more than 200 urban bodies.
Under the scheme, projects on environment protection, water conservation, heritage conservation, maintenance of gardens, removal of encroachment, illegal sign boards, hoardings and banners, and sanitation will be undertaken.
People in the 18 to 60 age group are eligible for the scheme, under which at least 50 people in each ward of urban local bodies will be given employment.
To register for it, a Jan Aadhaar card or its registration slip is required. Registrations can be done at e-Mitra centres. The government has allocated Rs 800 crore for the scheme, which was announced by the chief minister during this year’s state budget.
Gehlot also used the occasion to take a dig at PM Narendra Modi, who accused the states of using freebies to win votes. He said, “We have seen ‘ravadis’ being sold on a handcart in Johri Bazar. But providing free treatment and employment to needy people is the responsibility of the government, not the ‘ravadis'”.
Calling it historic, Gehlot said the scheme was prepared after studying similar ones being operated on a smaller scale in other states.
“We recently held a rally in Delhi against the Centre over inflation. This fight with the Centre will run parallel in public interest but here is an excellent scheme under which various types of works will be done,” Gehlot said.
Local-self government and urban development and housing minister Shanti Dhariwal said more than 4 lakh people have registered under the scheme and around 2.5 lakh job cards have been issued. The project was launched during an event at Ambedkar Bhawan. It was telecast live and district-level events were attended by ministers in charge of those districts. JMC-H mayor Munesh Gurjar, minister Mahesh Joshi, local MLAs Rafiq Khan and Amin Kagzi, and social welfare board chairperson Archana Sharma were present.
