Salman Khan’s ‘Tiger 3’ may not be able to replicate the success of Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Jawan’ in South territories, reveals trade expert – Exclusive | Hindi Movie News
Popular trade analyst Ramesh Bala spoke to ETimes about ‘Tiger 3’ and the film’s prospects down South. He revealed, “For the South, ‘Tiger 3’ and ‘Dunki’ are regular Bollywood movies. There’s no extra expectation like ‘Jawan‘. SRK and Atlee’s film had a South Indian connection because of the director and the actors. ‘Tiger 3’ is a typical Salman Khanand Katrina Kaif movie. It will attract the same kind of crowd that ‘Tiger Zinda Hai‘ had got since it’s a franchise film. There will be nothing special or extra at the South box office. If our South releases, which are slated to release this weekend, end up tanking, then ‘Tiger 3’ might pick up. We will have to just wait and see.”
Ever since SRK’s ‘Jawan’ created a flurry down South, film experts have been discussing the dominance of Hindi stars on Southern audiences or lack of thereof. Ramesh Bala explained, “Movies like ‘Dangal’ and ‘Krrish’ have done well in thr South. If it’s a universal movie or has top-notch action like ‘WAR’, it will attract the South Indian audience from the second or third day after release. On Diwali, our own movies with big actors will be releasing. So, people will wait and watch.”
Bala felt the South audience’s hopes will be first pinned to regional releases like ‘Japan’ starring Karthi and ‘Jigarthanda 2’. There are a few prominent releases expected from Malayalam and Telugu cinema as well. Bala added, “Basically, in cities like Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, there’s always a crowd which goes to watch Hindi movies regularly. But the ratio is very low. The footfalls for ‘Tiger 3’ might be more in Bengaluru and Hyderabad, than in Chennai.”
ETimes asked Bala if the tide would turn for Shah Rukh Khan’s next big release ‘Dunki’ which is slated to release in December. Bala said the expectations won’t be too different from those of ‘Tiger 3’. He said, “Dunki is not a ‘Jawan’ or ‘Pathaan’, which were action movies. So, it might register a soft opening. Rajkumar Hirani movies like ‘PK’ and ‘3 Idiots’ have done well in the past. But for that kind of reception, the word of mouth has to pick up.”
