Sms Hospital 1st Govt Facility In Raj To Conduct Swap Kidney Transplant | Jaipur News
Jaipur: Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital became the first government facility of the state to conduct swap kidney transplant.
In this case, a living kidney donor was incompatible with the recipient in the family but matched another patient requiring kidney transplant. The SMS Hospital helped the two families to meet and asked to donate kidneys to each other, thus making two kidney transplants possible.
“A wife wanted to donate her kidney to her husband, but her blood group did not match her husband’s. Similarly, in another case, the wife wanted to give her kidney to her husband but was found unsuitable donor for the man. In this swap kidney transplant, the two women donated kidneys to each other’s husbands,” said Dr Dhananjai Agarwal, senior professor (nephrology), SMS hospital.
The SMS hospital has performed more than 550 kidney transplants, but swap kidney transplant was the first. The nephrology department officials said that they are making efforts to perform more such transplants.
There are families in which they have donors, but the patient is not a suitable recipient, due to which, transplant does not take place and the patient must remain on dialysis. The swap kidney transplant makes the transplant possible in such families to give new lease of life to kidney patients requiring transplant. tnn
