Elections: Parties Eye Seats With Low Victory Difference |

Jaipur: The political parties are keeping their eyes on Assembly segments where the victory margin was up to 5,000 votes in elections in 2018.
Nine seats were decided by a narrow margin of up to 1,000 votes—four each were won by the BJP and the Congress. The remaining one seat was won by the Independent candidate who had eventually gone with the Congress. The election with the closest margin was held in Asind (Bhilwara) when BJP candidate Jabbar Singh Sankhala defeated Congress opponent Manish Merwara by a margin of just 154 votes. The next lowest was at Marwar Junction when Independent Khushveer Singh defeated BJP candidate Kesaram Choudhary by a margin of 251 votes.
The next vulnerable category is comprised of seven assembly segments where the victory was decided by a margin of 1,000–2,000 seats. The segments have two BJP’s stalwarts: Leader of Opposition Rajendra Singh Rathore, who won the polls by a margin of 1,850 votes against Congress candidate Rafique Mandelia. The six-time BJP MLA and former cabinet minister Kalicharan Saraf defeated the ace Congress leader Archana Sharma by a margin of 1,704 votes. Overall, 32 seats were decided by less than 2.5%–3% votes, giving 16 to the Congress and 12 to the BJP. Of the remaining four, one each was won by BTP and RLD, while the other two were by Independents. The political pundits consider the narrow margin of this scale to be ‘situational’ which could have gone in favour of either party.
“Our party is aware of the volatility of such seats which can turn the situation upside down. Considering the situation, the party has appointed secretaries in seats where the contest is a close fight. The idea is to increase the voter percentage of the party in these seats. In the coming days, you will see the visit of senior party leaders in the seats too,” said Swarnim Chaturvedi, Congress leader. On the other hand, the BJP has completed the party protocol of forming booth-level management committees and panna pramukhs in these seats. “In the last five years, the dynamics in many such seats have changed, but still, the party is not leaving any chance. During the Parivatan Sankalp Yatra, the party has read the pulse of people in these seats and has a comprehensive plan to make a clear victory in these seats,” said a BJP leader.

Seat sharing to be based on assembly election vote share
The seat-sharing formula between BJP and JD(S) in Karnataka is likely to be based on the number of votes each party received in the May 2023 assembly elections. This approach aims to avoid the mistakes made by the Congress and JD(S) alliance in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The parties will assess the strengths and weaknesses of each party in the Old Mysuru region before deciding on seat allocation. However, this formula could face challenges as BJP currently holds three seats that JD(S) may expect to receive. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has criticized the BJP-JD(S) alliance as an “unholy alliance.
