Jaisalmer: Sudden Hailstorm And Rain Damage Isabgol Worth ₹8 Crore In Jaisalmer | Jaipur News

Jaisalmer: Around 4000 sacks of isabgol worth over Rs 8 crore were damaged due to sudden hail storm and heavy rains on Tuesday evening in many villages of canal area including Mohangarh in Jaisalmer district. The sudden change in the weather wreaked havoc on the farmers who had come to the Mohangarh mandi to auction their harvest which included sacks of other grains like mustard, cumin, pulses and gram, which lay in the open. Reportedly there has been a loss of crores of rupees. In Jaisalmer city also, there was a heavy storm in the evening.
According to information, on Tuesday, preparations were being made for the auction but the grain sacks lying in the open were soaked in rainwater.
Confirming the loss, farmer leader Achalaram Jat said, “The sudden hailstorm and rain in Mohangarh and surrounding areas like Sutharwala, Sultana, Nehdai, Ramgarh etc. areas on Tuesday evening, caused extreme distress to the farmer community as thousands of sacks of isabgol and other crops kept in the open at the Mohangarh mandi were damaged as all the sacks got wet in the rain. We did not get enough time to cover them also. We have suffered a huge loss., which would amount to approximately Rs 8 Cr.””
He claimed that cemented sheds have been made at the Mohangarh Mandi to keep the stock of farmers safe during adverse weather, but for the last 2-3 years the traders of Mohangarh have encroached the space by keeping their stock throughout the year. Hence they had to keep their stock in the open. Jat added, “We had informed the administration and other officials of Mohangarh Mandi several times about the problem but it has not been resolved yet. Had there been sheds for our crops, the damage would have been less.”
Shahban Khan, a farmer, who had brought his crops for the auction on Tuesday said, “Today while preparations were underway for the auction, chana sized hail started falling and later it started raining heavily. Thousands of gunny bags were stacked in the mandi for weighing, and due to sudden rains, the bags got completely drenched. Due to which the farmers suffered huge losses. Farmers had sown crops by taking loans, but due to sudden rains, the future looks bleak.”
“The Mohangarh Mandi administration is also responsible for this loss as they failed to take timely action against the traders of Mohangarh who have encroached the shed for the last 2-3 years. hence due to any other option we had to keep our stock in the open,” alleged Khan.
