ERCP: Cong To Start 5-day Yatra In East Raj Over Centre’s Failure On Ercp | Jaipur News

JAIPUR: The Congress party’s proposed five-day yatra in 13 eastern Rajasthan districts demanding the Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project (ERCP) is likely to begin after the conclusion of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) parivartan yatra in the state on September 25.
Sources said the party does not have much time left for the yatra as the election commission is likely to announce poll dates in the first week of October and then the leaders would be busy with ticket distribution. The party feels that the yatra could find traction with the voters as the Congress feels that the Centre, despite a promise from the PM, denigrated its commitment.
Party sources said there were discussions on kicking off the yatra on September 25. The party had already given an invitation to party president leader Rahul Gandhi for a big rally at Mansarovar in Jaipur on September 23.
Depending on the date of the rally, sources said any day after September 25, the yatra could be launched.
The party campaign committee at its first meeting under the chairmanship of Govind Ram Meghwal said that the party would launch a yatra in the 13 districts of east Rajasthan on the breach of promise of the centre on the eastern canal project.
The nearly Rs 40,000 crore project to provide drinking water and irrigate over two lakh hectares of land from the excess water from Chambal and other perennial rivers for the parched eastern region of the desert state was conceived by the previous BJP government in the last year of its government.
It had demanded the Centre to provide it with a project of national importance.
Despite a change of government in the state, the Congress government continued with the project with its own money while the Centre has been putting hurdles in its implementation, according to the chief minister.
Chief minister Ashok Gehlot has been targeting the union water resources minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on the issue saying that though the minister belongs to Rajasthan he had failed to deliver on ERCP.
The Congress has been targeting Shekhawat and he was shown black flags during his visit to Eastern Rajasthan. Shekhawat is one of the contenders for the chief minister from the saffron party.
