Officials said that an analysis of major road accidents, involving three or more deaths, between January and June was done to understand the causes. In Sikar district, officials identified high-speed driving and overtaking at curves as the primary reason for major road accidents.
In the first six months this year, a total of 106 major road accidents were reported in the state with 378 deaths and 355 injured. Ajmer and Barmer districts had the maximum number of major road accidents at 7, followed by Bikaner, Jaipur Rural, Hanumangarh and Sikar. Sikar saw the maximum number of fatalities at 27, followed by Jaipur Rural, Ajmer, Barmer and Bikaner. Sirohi was on the top in terms of the number of injured at 45, followed by Jodhpur East, Jhunjhunu, Barmer and Dausa.
“The main cause of major accidents in Sikar district was high-speed driving, as per the data provided by the police department. A number of accidents took place at road curves, indicating that another cause of major accidents was overtaking at such curves,” said a senior official of the transport and road safety department.
Based on this analysis, the department will now advise agencies concerned to ensure regular enforcement for speed limit, especially near sharp curves. Also, inspection will be done of road design and enforcement stepped up against wrong-side movement of vehicles on highways and major roads.
