Tiger: Raj Ranks Third With 88 Tigers In Its Four Reserves: Report | Jaipur News

JAIPUR: According to the report, ‘Status of Tigers, Co-predators and Prey in India 2022’, released by the Union forest ministry on Saturday, Rajasthan has 88 tigers in its four tiger reserves. The report highlights that Rajasthan ranks third in the Central Indian Landscape and Eastern Ghats with a total of 88 tigers, significantly fewer than states like Madhya Pradesh (785) and Maharashtra (444). The tiger population in Rajasthan has shown a steady rise over the years, starting from 32 in 2006, increasing to 36 in 2010, 45 in 2014, 69 in 2018, and reaching 88 in 2022. As per the report, the highest number of tigers, 57, are in Ranthambore National Park, followed by 19 in Sariska Tiger Reserve. Ramgarh Vishdhari and Mukundra reserves have one tiger each. A forest officer said, “In recent times the tiger number has touched 100, as many cubs have been born in the state. The conservation effort is bearing fruits, but Rajasthan cannot be compared with states like Madhya Pradesh.”

Three tiger reserves in Rajasthan, Ranthambore, Sariska and Mukundra Hills, had shown a steady improvement in management effectiveness evaluation (MEE) scores in a report released in April to mark 50 years of Project Tiger. MEE has helped in identifying gaps in conservation efforts and enabled more effective strategies for ensuring the long-term survival of these magnificent creatures.
A senior forest officer in the state said, “The improvement in MEE ranking is a testimony to our commitment towards protecting our tiger reserves and conserving our biodiversity.” The process of work evaluation of tiger reserves in the country started in 2006. The fifth cycle of assessment covered 51 tiger reserves. To carry out the assessment, ten independent regional expert committees (REC) were constituted and deputed in five different clusters of tiger landscapes.
