Jaipur: The Crime Branch of Jaipur police on Thursday arrested a 25-year-old man who managed to disguise himself among a crowd of BJP protesters and allegedly stole the service pistol of a police security officer (PSO) assigned to BJP president and MP CP Joshi.
The accused had a penchant for targeting political events and gatherings, particularly rallies and protests, where he would monitor the crowd to steal wallets from people without drawing attention.
Additional commissioner of police (crime) Kailash Chandra Bishnoi stated that police arrested Purshottam alias Ghansyam, a resident of Bharatpur district, found of living as a vagrant in Jaipur’s Tonk Road area.
Police recovered the stolen service pistol and three live cartridges from the accused. The accused had a history of infiltrating rallies and large gatherings to commit pickpocketing.
According to the police, during the BJP political rally here on June 13, the accused and his accomplice strategically positioned themselves near the Statue Circle with the intention to engage in pickpocketing and make easy money.
During the rally, chaos ensued when protestors and policemen clashed. Taking advantage of the confusion and commotion, the two accused managed to steal the pistol from the PSO’s pocket. The situation provided them with an opportunity to flee without drawing any attention.
After stealing the pistol, the accused hatched a plan to sell it off for a hefty sum and make quick money. But later, they decided to use the stolen pistol for illegal activities and hatched a plan to use it for robberies and loots. They intended to intimidate victims by brandishing the stolen weapon, said police.
The PSO had reported the theft to the Ashok Nagar police station. Following the incident, the crime branch took charge of the case and initiated a series of extensive raids throughout the state. As a result, one of the two accused was held but the other is still at large.
