Waterlogging Fears Grip Civic Body | Jaipur News

JAIPUR: Officials of Jaipur Municipal Corporation-Greater (JMC-G) are worried about a large area under their jurisdiction where there is no sewerage and drainage network.
“Every monsoon, the situation is grave in these localities. As there is no sewerage and drainage network, we face a tough time in draining out the water from the streets. At times, the water remains stranded for more than 48 hours at a few of these localities. We have no other option than keeping a substantial number of pumps ready to clear the water,” said a senior official of JMC-G.
Officials said that at present there are 737 drainage lines in the seven zones of JMC-G. However, a large section of area in Prithviraj Nagar under Jhotwarazone and in Jagatpura under Sanganer zone does not have any sewerage or drainage lines, making it difficult to drain out rainwater.
“These areas are huge. It would be close to 50% of the total area under our jurisdiction. Councillors of all the wards of these areas should be on high alert along with local officials during the entire monsoon period. I am going to visit these localities personally to ensure everything is in order,” said Puneet Karnawat, deputy mayor of JMC-G.
In areas that have drainage and sewerage lines in place, JMC-G engineers have started the cleaning job. Till now, they have managed to clean 429 lines, work on another 219 lines is in progress, and cleaning of 89 more lines would start soon, said officials.
“In all we have managed to clean 58% of the drainage lines under our jurisdiction. Work for about 12% of the drainage lines is yet to start. We are hopeful that we are going to clean the entire drainage network by the end of this month,” said an official.
Besides carrying out cleaning of the drainage lines and manholes, JMC-G officials are also setting up two control rooms: one at the Malviya Nagar fire station and the other at the Vishwakarma fire station.
“These control rooms would be open round the clock from June 15 to September 15 and would be equipped to fight any emergency,” said Karnawat.
