Demand For Hindi Rises Due To Better Career Prospects | Jaipur News

Jaipur: The demand for studying Hindi in higher education has been growing in the University of Rajasthan since the past few years with almost three times applications being received, said department officials on Tuesday.
Urvashi Sharma, head of department at the varsity said, “The demand for Hindi has been increasing in the past few years due to wide career prospects after studying this language. Most students come from Hindi medium schools so it is comparatively easy for them. Last year, we received nearly 475 applications for our postgraduate course whereas we had 60 seats only. Looking at the demand, from this year onwards, we have increased a section in PG and have 60 additional seats.”
The senior official said after studying Hindi, students have a wide range of options like journalism, civil services, banking, state-based competitive examinations and teaching for both schools and college level, which is a preferred option by many students.
“Many students prefer to take Hindi when they apply for civil services or Rajasthan Public Service Commission because it is a scoring subject and being residents of the Hindi speaking belt, students can understand the topics better while preparation even with short-term coaching. Due to these reasons, the demand for Hindi is high in higher education, whereas in schools the shift is mostly towards English medium education,” added the head of the department.
The university is now planning to introduce short-term crash courses for 15 days to 30 days for foreign students that the university to give basic training in Hindi speaking.
Prof Mukta Agarwal, principal of Maharani College in Jaipur, which offers 60 seats for BA (Hons) Hindi said, “The demand for Hindi is high with students opting for honours, pass or one-year courses. The percentage cut-off for Hindi is also not that high and seats never go vacant for subjects.”
