Jaipur: Indian poet and lyricist Gulzar, while speaking at the Jaipur Literature Festival on Friday, said that no language was small and that all languages with scripts can be considered as national languages.
He further said that languages like Tamil, Marathi that have been given classical status, how can these be considered as regional languages.
Speaking about his book, A Poem A Day: 365 Contemporary Poems, Gulzar said, “When I was planning to write this book, I thought that if it is in Urdu, then it does not represent the entire country. I started thinking what is today’s contemporary shayari that is relevant to people’s lives. In this process I started to understand different languages and found a common relation, that is the reaction to political and socio-economic developments of the country.”
He added that in the book he has covered 400 poets from 1947-2017, trying to capture the mood of the country and how it changed.
“We must understand that no language is small and all languages with scripts are all national languages. How can languages which have been given the classical status like Tamil or Marathi be called regional. People need to recognise that literature even though in different languages or dialects are all talking about your lives and how it is getting affecting due to different situations in the country…all languages are beautiful,” added Gulzar.
He also said that shayari is not something that can be kept confined to textbooks and that “it is as alive as you are.”
