Jaipur: The forest team at Jamwa Ramgarh Wildlife Sanctuary, situated 30 kilometre away from Jaipur, remained on toes as tiger ST-24 which strayed out of the Sariska Tiger Reserve (STR) continued to move in the area.
As department has decided not to tranquilise the big cat and take it to the reserve, monitoring in the forest region was beefed up.
DFO of Sariska Tiger Reserve D P Jagawat said, “The big cat is safe and our teams are recording the movement. We don’t have to tranquilise the animal or carry out rescue operation as there is no situation of human-animal conflict.”
The male tiger is 2-and-half-years old and was living in Ajabgarh range close to the STR for past five months.
This week, big cat moved to Jamwa Ramgarh which was a vital forest corridor contiguous to Sariska Tiger Reserve.
An official said, large tracts were declared Jamwa Ramgarh Reserve Forest in 1961 under the Rajasthan Forest Act of 1953 and additional areas were added to create the wildlife sanctuary in 1982 under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972.
An official said, “In the past, the Ramgarh WS region was vital overspill area for the young tigers of Sariska. After tiger population grew in 1999, the Rajasthan forest department submitted a proposal to the central government requesting that the jurisdiction of Sariska Tiger Reserve be extended to incorporate Jamwa Ramgarh.”
However, currently tigers moving out of STR has raised a question mark on the habitat. A retired officer said, “There is no second thought that STR is not disturbed due to human presence. Either tiger move out after a territorial fight or disturbance in the core area. Earlier, Tiger 13 was continuously moving out, before it finally disappeared. Tigers outside the reserve are not safe and administration should put efforts to make habitat fit for living.”
