300 Die In Accidents In City This Year | Jaipur News

Jaipur: At least 300 persons died in 1,019 accidents in the city in the first five months, the deadliest in the past three years, official figures say.
During the same period in 2020, the city had reported 769 accidents with 228 people getting killed and 638 injured. In the same corresponding period last year, 859 accidents claimed 238 lives leaving 711 injured.
“The city was in throes of the pandemic for two consecutive years, especially in 2021 when it was going through a devastating spell of the second wave. There were strict curbs on people’s movements and as a result traffic mishaps fell drastically. On the other hand, as the city began to see to some semblance of pre-Covid era, accidents also rose,” said an official.
According to officials, another important factor included increase in the number of vehicles on city streets. In 2020, Jagatpura RTO office registered 7,330 vehicles and the Jhalana office recorded 1,16,373 registrations. In 2021, Jagatpura office logged 13,119 vehicle registration and 1,25,449 at Jhalana office.
This year, Jagatpura RTO has already registered 10,669 vehicles and may breach last year’s figures. Jhalana RTO has registered 69,630 registrations, which may increase by the end of this year.
Besides increase in vehicles, unsafe driving and bottlenecks could not be ruled out for the rising toll. For instance, the last NCRB (National Crime Records Bureau) figure on traffic accidents indicates that a major proportion of the accidents in the state tend to occur between 6 pm and 9 pm. It is also the time period when most police checkpoints begun to empty out.
