Man ‘falls sick’ at police station during questioning, dies in hosp | Jaipur News
JAIPUR: A 25-year-old man died under mysterious circumstances at a hospital after he reportedly “fell sick” during questioning about a series of vehicle thefts at Pratap Nagar police station on Thursday night. A judicial officer commenced an investigation on Friday to ascertain the circumstances surrounding Nitesh Soni’s demise while in police custody.
DCP (East) Gyan Chand Yadav stated that Soni was wanted in multiple cases of vehicle theft, primarily targeting minivans throughout the city. Yadav added, “The police station staff had brought him in for questioning, but he was not placed under arrest,” Yadav added.
Soni’s death has left cops grappling for answers as to why he was taken in for questioning and the duration of his detention, when norms stipulate that a suspect should be presented before the nearest magistrate within 24 hours. According to another official, Soni died in the hospital at 11pm.
SHO (Pratap Nagar) Manvendra Singh said that Soni complained of dizziness and his sugar levels were reported to be unstable.
When Soni complained about feeling unwell, the police station went into a tizzy and took him to RUHS. However, he showed no signs of improvement. Therefore, he was swiftly taken to SMS Hospital where he died around 11pm.Following post-mortem on Friday afternoon, police handed over Soni’s body to his family members.
Soni’s brother Prakash said that his brother had a pre-existing illness and had left home several years ago due to addiction and other bad habits. “He was keeping ill when he was taken for questioning,” he said.
Police stated that Soni was wanted in eight cases at different police stations. They claimed that substance abuse had adversely affected his health. However, the circumstances of his death are shrouded in mystery and it also raises questions on the methods of interrogation.
