Jaipur: At least 18 doctors in Rajasthan have thrown their scrub caps into the poll ring with the promise of a prescription for every unfulfilled electoral promise.
Dentists, surgeons, gynaecologists, cardiologists, general physicians — the list of medical professionals in the electoral fray almost reads like a hospital roster.
Vivek Machra, 34, was a dentist in a government hospital before he quit his job to answer his new calling of fighting for farmers’ rights in Sri Dungargarh, an assembly constituency known for peanut cultivation.
“I worked in a government hospital for a year before realising that farmers need me more than patients,” said Machra, who is contesting the seat on a Rashtriya Loktantrik Party ticket. “In our constituency, we have 30,000 tubewells, but power supply is an issue.”
Deepak Ghogra, a gynaecologist at a government hospital, moved the Jodhpur high court for permission to contest the Dungarpur seat as a Bharatiya Tribal Party candidate.
Azizuddin Azad, a 56-year-old surgeon at Jaipur’s Sawai Man Singh Hospital, resigned to join politics in 2013. “I became a PCC secretary that very year, but the party preferred someone else over me when I wanted to contest the Sawai Madhopur seat that my father (Alauddin Azad) once represented. So, I decided to file my nomination as an Independent,” he said.
Laparoscopic surgeon Bharat Kumar Marmath, 45, is the BSP nominee for Ramganj Mandi, He quit his job in 2016 to contest the polls two years later, but backed out at the last moment.
“In my constituency, which is famous for mining, diseases like silicosis and tuberculosis are common. Alcohol and drug addiction are also rampant. Being a doctor, I feel the people’s pain; so, I have decided to try and do something about it,” he said.
In Udaipur, retired government doctor Rajkumar Yadav, 64, is the BSP candidate. “I dedicated my life to caring for patients. People know me here as a doctor; let’s see how they vote,” he said.
The BJP candidate for Khajuwala seat, Vishwanath, is also a doctor. Medicine specialist Param Navdeep Singh, 60, is contesting the Jhotwara seat as a nominee of the Aazad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram). Shikha Meel Barala, a gynaecologist, is the Congress candidate from Chomu constituency.
