‘in 5 Yrs, City May Need 19% More Water’ | Ahmedabad News

AHMEDABAD: If the city maintains its current growth rate, it would need about 19% more water in the next five years compared to 2021, indicated a projection by CEPT University study. The study, part of City Studio Initiative, was led by tutor Rujul Joshi.
According to the 2021 data, the city’s per capita water consumption was 135 litres per capita per day.

“The projected water consumption growth in eastern city is 19% in five years from 273 to 325 million litres per day (MLD) compared to 17% for western city from 174 to 204 MLD,” stated the study.
The study divided the city in three categories: fringes where higher vacant land is available, core of the city, and transit influenced zone with presence of BRTS and MRTS. The study took into consideration growth rates of 4%, 2% and 3.2% respectively for the three categories.
Joshi said the idea of the projection was to highlight the difference between linear and progressive growth. “Linear growth is based on census projections, while market projections, also identified as improved economy scenario, shows higher growth rate. Such projections can give a better scenario to planners,” he said, adding that compared to the core areas, the fringes require special attention.
