JAIPUR: The death toll rose to 5 and two more are feared dead in the Chambal accidental drowning case as bodies of three women were retrieved from the river on Sunday.
Joint teams of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan police searched for bodies of five missing pilgrims the entire day and by evening three bodies were found-all of women-which were handed over to the Madhya Pradesh administration.
On Saturday morning, two persons had drowned and five were missing when a group of 17 pilgrims were swept away by a strong current while crossing the Chambal river on foot near Rodhai Ghat under Mandrayal police station of Karauli. All the pilgrims were from Chiland village of Madhya Pradesh and were on their way to Kaila Devi temple in Karauli. The road distance from their village to Kaila Devi temple is nearly 350 kms, but after crossing the river it is only 35 km away from Rodhai Ghat in Karauli.
Ankit Singh, district collector of Karauli, told TOI on Sunday, “Three more bodies were found and were identified as Rukmani, Rashmi, and Alopa Bai. Two pilgrims, identified as Lavkush and Brijmohan, are still missing. We got a list (of the pilgrims) from the MP administration. The joint search operation would be restarted on Monday as due to darkness it was put to halt in the evening.”
