Water Crisis: Sriganganagar Reels Under Water Crisis | Jaipur News

Jaipur: Punjab government not sending water to Rajasthan has impacted the drinking water supply in Sriganganagar district. PHED officials have decided to cut down the quantity of drinking water supply in the urban areas of Sriganganagar on Wednesday. “So far so good. There is not much effect in the district. However, we have decided to cut down the supply of water in the urban regions of the district for a day,” said Mohanlal Arora, superintendent engineer in-charge of Sriganganagar district.
The members of farmers’ associations in Sriganganagar were protesting for an indefinite period at the collectorate office in district since Monday.
Protesters claim that farming has severely been hit in the district owing to the lack of water supply.
“For the last four to five days, Punjab government has relased no water into the Gang Canal of Rajasthan. Punjab government is diverting the water towards Pakistan from Harike headworks. There is shortage of irrigation and drinking water in the entire district,” said Amar Singh Bishnoi, a farmer and leader of a farmer association.
A senior PHED official from the district claimed that so far only the urban areas had been affected. However, if such situation previls for a few more days, it will have immense impact on drinking water supply of the entire district. “The government should try to find a solution as soon as possible else the situation would get out of control. We came to know that Punjab government has released 1,000 cusecs of water that would reach Rajasthan on Wednesday or by Thursday. It won’t suffice to meet the demand,” the official added.
However, villagers in Sriganganagar said they too were hit by water crunch. “Till Monday evening, we were getting less quantity of water. Since Tuesday morning, there is no supply. The water bodies of our village are completely dry,” said Gurlal Singh Brar, a resident of Rootwali village.
