Diversions, Hawkers, Buses: Jhalana Road A Traffic Mess | Jaipur News

JAIPUR: The ongoing construction work related to the Bisalpur II project by the Public Health and Engineering Department (PHED) has caused major disruptions to traffic flow on a section of Jhalana Road in Jaipur. Additionally, the presence of unregistered and illegal hawkers on both sides of Shanti Path has further exacerbated the congestion issues.
A PHED official explained, “We have started laying pipelines on Govind Marg, extending from near the Pink Square Mall to the Gurdwara Crossing of Transport Nagar. Due to the pipeline alignment on the left side, traffic heading towards Transport Nagar is allowed, but this stretch on Govind Marg has been made one-way until our work is completed. As a result, traffic from other directions has been diverted.”
Consequently, vehicles heading towards Jawaharlal Nehru Marg (JLN) are now utilizing Jhalana Road through Jawahar Nagar. Many of these vehicles take a left turn at Shanti Path, eventually reaching the JDA crossing on JLN Marg via this route.
A small portion of the traffic continues straight towards Sanganeri Gate from the Gurdwara crossing, but their numbers are relatively low.
Traffic officials have observed that this road is becoming increasingly congested, primarily due to the influx of long-distance buses and trucks coming from Agra or Delhi. Most of these vehicles take a left turn from the JDA Circle, passing through Trimurti Circle, and then take a right turn at Narayan Singh Circle to resume their usual route.
“While the width of Govind Marg and Shanti Path should be sufficient to accommodate traffic, the presence of unauthorized hawkers with carts has significantly reduced the available space. This has led to severe congestion on the JDA crossing-bound lane,” explained a senior traffic official.
A traffic constable on duty revealed that during peak evening hours, the traffic snarl often extends beyond the Vijay Path Tiraha intersection. “It’s important to note that besides regular office commuters heading towards Transport Nagar, residents of neighbouring areas like Tilak Nagar, Gurunanakpura, Raja Park, and Adarsh Nagar frequently use this stretch,” said the constable.
Officials of the Jaipur Municipal Corporation (Greater) clarified that although they have the authority to take action against unregistered hawkers on any road, they typically do not interfere on roads managed by the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA). “If traffic officials approach the JMC Greater in the proper manner, we will certainly remove these street vendors. No vendors are allowed beyond the designated vending zones,” stated Puneet Karnawat, Deputy Mayor of JMC (Greater).
JDA officials acknowledged that they often conduct drives against encroachments by hawkers with the assistance of JMC officials on city roads under JDA jurisdiction. However, this process can be time-consuming and challenging, they said.
